Man, Renew Your Vows is totally my favorite Spider-Man thing right now. And this feels like a more grounded take on the life of Peter Parker, which I prefer over say the Peter “Stark” Parker that appears in the current Avengers series. Don’t get me wrong, I’m actually a fan of that series, but I definitely find this take on Spider-Man the most interesting right now.
What makes this series so interesting so far is how it’s still a Spider-Man book… but it focuses on Peter’s life as both a husband and a father. And more importantly, he’s not the star of the book at all. You get to take in MJ’s perspective on things as well: feeling pushed aside by her husband for his work; trying to juggle her own career and raising a child as well. Scenes like MJ swinging from webs while trying to get their daughter to school on time AND having an inner monologue about trying to plan a birthday party… it’s all very banal in a fantastical way. This is brilliant writing right here.
