I’ve been very excited about IvX #1 and it was well worth the wait. This is one of the most solid and well-written X-Men issues I’ve read this year. And I’ve read a lot of X-Men this year! The story is a progression of stuff that’s been going on in other X-books. I’ve been reading Extraordinary X-Men all year for instance. And I had read the issue #0 of IvX as well.
The basic premise is that there’s a Terrigen gas cloud that will turn humans that come into contact with it Inhumans (that’s good for Inhumans) but kills any mutants that come into contact with it (that’s bad for mutants). What makes this setup so interesting is that it creates two camps that are sort of forced together. For instance you’ve got clashing personalities like Magneto or Emma Frost up against the likes of Beast or Logan. Heck, even seeing Storm’s motivations are interesting here.
Everything about this issue is great. I don’t even mind that it cost a couple of extra bucks compared to most Marvel issues seeing as how it has a gorgeous heavy glossy cover. The writing is fantastic, as is the art. And there was actually a lot of stuff going on here. Moments like Emma Frost seducing Black Bolt, or Jean Grey taking on Karnak. This is the kind of comic issue that I could see myself wanting to re-read again soon.
