Damn, I love this series. I don’t know what we’re supposed to call it – Avengers .1? But basically between the regular issues of the current Avengers series we get these issues that take place “back in the day.” Most of the team has left Captain America because they’re tired, or something. And now Cap has to train Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to be a team.
The artwork is awesome. It has a very classic look to it. And the writing is wonderful. I can see why Marc Waid gets the applaud that he does. This second issue was awesome. Probably better than the first. I had to spoil anything – so look away – but it features the old X-Men team briefly in their yellow suits and all. So awesome.
I loved the opening of the story where The Avengers are fighting this sea monster thing on the beach and all the onlookers are unimpressed. The fight ends and Quicksilver is too tired to bring the team back… so they take the bus. The visual is hilarious. Really, I can’t help but gush. This is only two issues in, but I love it. And with X-Men ’92 seemingly ending, I’m glad to have some kind of cool throwback book to look forward to each month.
